Chest Protectors Buying Guide
Chest protectors are most commonly associated with baseball and softball. They are designed to protect the chest, heart, stomach, ribs, and collarbone. Basically the torso. While baseball chest protectors have a removable groin protector, softball protectors do not. The youth chest protectors have the groin protector fixed to the chest pad. Senior and adult players can play without the groin protector. For this reason, the adult chest protectors do not come with a groin protector.
When choosing the right chest protector for you, it is important to consider both the side straps and the top strap. The side straps hold the gear in place. Proper adjustment of the side straps will provide you with a tight fit ensuring that your upper body is well covered. The top straps assist with a tight upper fit ensuring that the collarbone is well covered and preventing the chest protector from sliding up to your chin when you squat.
To prevent the gear from restricting the movement of the arm when throwing the ball, the throwing arm has a shoulder cap that allows a range of movement all while keeping it well covered and protected.
To select the right size, chest protectors are placed in different categories each with its own size. For youth players between the ages of 7-9 years, the right size is 13.5 inches. For senior players in high school and college, 15.5 inches is the recommended size while for adult players 16.5 inches is the best. The inches measure the lengthy from the naval to the top of the sternum.
