Finding the Right Bat Weight for Younger Players

One of the areas where a parent can influence their kid’s attitude towards baseball is on the size of the baseball bat. As parents we tend to have that lingering thought at the back of our minds all the time that our kids are destined to grow up. Taking this into baseball, we then buy large bats for them thinking that like clothes, they will grow into them. This is usually a bad idea.

You see, when kids are at that tender age where they are starting to learn, the focus should be taking simple steps. This means that they should lean more towards practicing with a lighter bat in order to develop their hand-eye coordination and swinging speed. Once they have gotten the hang of it, then they can progress towards using heavier bats and even baseball bat weights. So what happens is when the bat is too heavy or big at the start then learning becomes more difficult and more frustrating. Eventually, this could result in a negative attitude and eventually a total distaste for the sport.

So, how can younger players determine the best size for themselves? The trick is usually quite simple and it involves testing the bat weight and seeing how much control you can retain during a swing. One great way to do this is to hold the baseball bat in the normal position and then switching the top hand to behind the other hand. Once the kid has done this, ask them to take a swing and judge if they feel like they still retain control of the bat.

If the bat is too heavy, then they can practice this using a lighter one. Once they have secured the proper bat weight, they need to practice their moves. Soon after wards once they get the hang of it, they should add more weight using doughnuts or sleeves. This will help them develop their baseball specific muscles as well as their swing mechanics helping them gradually move up in their game.
