Breaking in Your Baseball Glove

Nowadays we continue to see the rise of baseball gloves that are bought shelf ready. This mean they require little to no breaking in. However, it has long been a tradition of baseball fans to get gloves made of hard leather that will most certainly require breaking in. Its tradition, you might say.

You can find a lot of information online that tries to explain the best way to break in your baseball glove. While some of this information is worthy of consideration, some of it is not. It can prove a lengthy and frustrating task to get the right method but worry not. In this article we will look at a few do’s and dont’s of breaking in your baseball glove.

Let’s start with the dont’s. Never use petroleum jelly or olive oil on your glove and never put the glove in a microwave oven as these ideas will only serve to destroy your glove. The following procedure however will do a good job.

  1. Fill a bucket with water and dip the glove in for a good 5 minutes
  2. Remove and insert a baseball in the glove as far as you can allowing it to stretch.
  3. Tie the top of the glove using a strong string with the baseball still inside.
  4. Allow the water to drain.
  5. Put the glove out to air dry in the shade for a few days
  6. Untie the glove, remove the baseball and put the glove in the cloth drier. Set to hot and let it dry for 15 minutes. This process allows the leather to get beat up.
  7. Take the glove and bend it especially the fingers. The more you do this the softer the leather becomes. And there you have it, a well broken in baseball gloves!
