How to Break in a Baseball Bat

How to Break in Your Baseball Bat

Hey guys, this is going to be a short post on how you should properly break in your brand new baseball bat.

I get some comments saying that their bat doesn’t have enough pop, and people always ask me if there’s something wrong with their new bat.

The answer is no.

If you do not know what breaking in a bat is or how to do it, this can save you a lot of money by making sure you don’t have to get a new baseball bat right after you got your new one.

I didn’t learn how to properly break in my baseball bat until high school. All of the baseball bats that I had during middle school years and before never got broken in properly.

What Are The Benefits?

Some of the benefits of breaking in a baseball bat include:

  • Adding a little more life to the bat
  • Ensuring that you have the maximum pop that the bat has
  • Having a much more comfortable swing
  • Getting used to your new bat before a game (some bats have a learning curve to them)

When I say add a little more life to the bat I am mostly talking about composite bats. Composite is a type of rubber if you didn’t know and it becomes a little more worn-in when you break the bat in.

So in the game, there won’t be any hard and non-broken-in parts of the bat that can potentially break easier later on.

How Do You Break In a Baseball Bat?

Here is how you should properly break in a baseball bat:

  • Hit a regular baseball at a moderate speed
  • Turn the baseball bat a quarter turn
  • Repeat about 200 times

You can do this on a tee, soft-toss, or even live pitching (if it isn’t too fast). The reason that I wouldn’t recommend breaking it in with faster pitching is that the bat still has to be broken-in, so that fast pitching might break it early on in its life.

Overall that’s all there is to break in a baseball bat, and yet so many people don’t know how to do this which can cost them.

Make sure you do your friends a favor and either share this article with them or just tell them how to break in a new bat so they don’t acidentally break it or think that there’s something wrong with it.

Thank you so much for checking this out and make sure you look at some of my other how-tos or reviews on all things baseball!
