Increasing the Speed of Your Swing

When talking about increasing the speed of your swing, there are generally two theories. Swinging a light weight bat or swinging a heavier bat that results in an increase in momentum. The idea is to generate enough velocity for a more powerful ball hit creating more flight distance.

Most people have bought into the notion that a lighter bat is always better. With the advent of aluminum bats, this idea continues to be sold to the public. The down side is while lighter bats may be good for younger players; it may actually work against them as they progress further into their careers where inevitably they will need to use a heavier bat. This then means that their performance may quickly go down.

To better understand the concept of swing mechanics, it’s good to understand how the human musculature works. What gives a player a quick swing speed is the twitch muscles, that is, keeping everything else constant. With this in mind, its suffice to say that regardless of how light a baseball bat is,  you can only swing as fast as your twitch muscles allow. Clearly, light weight bats may not be the answer.

If on the other hand you are ready and willing to add extra weight on the bat or simply use a heavier baseball bat, you can develop greater baseball specific muscles making you endure the heavier load while adding on the twitch muscles.

Training with a heavier bat is therefore more preferable. You can also add more resistance to your bat using baseball bat weights. These come in two main types; doughnuts and sleeve weights. They distribute weight on the barrel of the bat. When you finally stand on the plate with a standard baseball bat, it feels lighter. Thanks to the resistance swinging using a heavier bat, your muscles will most likely have developed making you swing faster and achieving greater ball flight distance.
