Baseball Gloves 2019

Best Baseball Gloves in 2019

So if you’re visiting this website, I really hope that you know what a baseball glove is. For those of you who don’t, the baseball glove is easily one of the most important tools in the game of baseball.  I think of the baseball glove as the barrier that protects your hand when you are either fielding or catching.  Without this important tool, you can really hurt your hands while playing this game, so make sure you have one!

History of the Baseball Glove

Did you know at first, players did not use baseball gloves? Ouch!  Imagine a fast grounder coming right at you, speeding over the dirt and as it comes closer you hear the whizzing of the seams.  When you would field this ball with

a glove it is much easier.  All you would do with a glove is line up with the ball and match the pocket with the ball’s path.  This was much harder when baseball players did not have gloves.

What the players would do is knock the ball down or hit it down so it stops, allowing them to pick it up and make the play.  How many times do you think these guys broke their hands from trying to field one of these?

The earliest glove actually more like a batting glove. It was really not meant for scooping baseballs up and making crazy double plays.  These early baseball gloves were meant to knock or hit the ball down so that they can pick it up, NOT for catching and scooping. Baseball players now would use these to get better at fielding, buy back then there was no special practice except for getting reps.

Albert Spalding was a first baseman for the white sox and the red sox.  At first, Spalding was very superstitious about

the use of gloves in the league.  Spalding tried it out one day and actually became one of the biggest influencers in the game of baseball to use gloves.  In other words, he was against using gloves at first, then supported gloves to the point where the whole league would follow.  This same man actually founded one of the most popular sporting companies: Spalding.  The most ironic thing about this is that the NBA uses Spalding basketballs, but the guy who created the company played baseball!  I guess you can say that he was a very influential guy.

The next step for baseball gloves was the webbing in between the thumb and index finger pocket.  This I think really made it a baseball glove because now they can catch the ball and field the baseball easier than ever before.  I always catch the ball in the pocket and think how would it be if it wasn’t there.  Nevermind I already know, I would get hit in the face a whole lot more. This connection also creates the sound we all love, the “POP” sound.  It is such a powerful sound that can echo throughout a whole field and can intimidate the other players while you are warming up or getting reps.

The second biggest invention in the baseball glove area was the catcher’s glove.  If you have ever used a catchers glove, you can tell that it is a very big and heavy glove.  This is because of all of the padding that they need to protect their hands from small cork balls coming at them at speeds from 50mph-100mph.  I think that it is pretty obvious that this would hurt your bare hands a lot if there was no glove.

The Different Types of Baseball Gloves

There are different types of mitts in baseball for almost every position in the field.  Some positions require shorter lengths and some positions provide longer lengths.  Once you see what each player in each position has to do, you can then see why there are so many varieties of gloves.

Infielders Glove:

An infielder is required to make really fast plays while sprinting around the infield.  Most of what infielders see are grounders.  With a shorter length, they can do this easily.  The shorter length allows them to get the ball out of the glove quicker, allowing them to save time when trying to beat the runner.  Infielders gloves are usually stiff, allowing them to field the ball without closing it all the way.  If you are on a high level of baseball, you might even see infielders do glove flips or scoops, allowing them to be super fast and not have to transfer the ball to their throwing hand.  Infielders gloves usually are 11-12 inches, but you can always use any glove you want.

Outfielders Glove:

An outfielders glove is quite the opposite of an infielders glove. What an outfielder is required to do is have a lot of range, calling for a bigger glove.  Most of what outfielders see are pop-ups or line drives.  It takes a little more power to be able to hit it to the outfield.  In the outfield, there is a little speed needed, but mostly if you can get to the ball you’re good. Outfielders gloves have big pockets in them so that whenever you catch or field a ball, it stays in.  These gloves usually are around 12-13 inches, which is really big for a glove but it is needed.

Catchers Mitt:

Catchers jobs are actually quite simple, catch the pitchers pitch.  Sometimes they can get a popup but after that all they get are pitches.  These gloves are made with a lot of padding, because of the speeds that the balls come in.  You can actually break fingers if either you catch the ball the wrong way or if you aren’t using a catchers glove.  I really like these mitts because of the sound that the balls make when it hits the pocket.

First Baseman’s Mitt:

The first baseman’s mitt has a unique design that allows first basemen to reach as far as they can to get the runner out at first.  These gloves are made for scooping and just receiving a regular throw from a teammate.  Really wherever you put this glove the ball will find its way into it.  These are the longest types of gloves that you can find.

Some of My Favorite Gloves

These are some of my favorite picks of the gloves that I reviewed so far.  Please be my guest and go through some of my reviews so you can make sure that you can find the glove that you’re looking for.  Also, I just want to let you know that these are my reviews that I personally wrote so I’m telling you that you’re not getting anything fake here. Also please let me know in the comments if you want me to add any gloves to the list so I can put it up here.

Mizuno MVP Prime

The Mizuno MVP Prime is a great glove selection not only for its great performance but its flashiness.  This glove comes in some really sweet colors that anyone can like.  My favorite color scheme is the red white and blue but besides that, this is a pretty solid glove.  This is one of the first gloves that Mizuno showed off their new technology called Heel Flex Control.  This basically just gives you more flexibility in the glove and since this technology is patented, this gives you an edge in the competition.  You got the soft leather and the responsiveness of the thumb and pinky, which makes this glove a really great choice for anyone.  This is a great pick for infielders and pitchers. You can find more on this glove here.

Mizuno World Win GXF75 First Base Mitt

I really like this first baseman’s mitt and if you’re a first baseman I think that you will too.  This first baseman’s glove has thick leather so that means you’ll have to break it in a little more unless you like a more firm glove.  I personally tend to find the ball stay in the glove when it’s broken in a little more. Speaking the ball staying in the glove, I think anyone that has this glove can say that the ball almost sticks inside.  This is really nice for when you’re scooping balls because we all know how sometimes if you don’t get it right you just hit it the opposite way.  Anyways this is an awesome first baseman’s glove. All Star Pro Elite Catcher’s Mitt

So obviously you can tell that this glove is a catchers mitt.  I like to mix up the variety so that everyone can find something but anyways I like this one.  It is made with Japanese tanned US steer hide material.  For those of you who do not know of this material, it is a high-quality steer hide that is tanned using Japanese techniques.  The benefits of doing this are for the catcher’s mitt to be broken in at a rapid rate.  This gives you less time breaking it in and more time throwing people out and catching curveballs.  One key feature that this glove also has is that it has a strategic use of black and tan leathers.  The black leather is more firm and for control and tan is for comfort and sound. Wilson A2000 Super Skin Series DP15

Basically, I would say that 70% of all baseball players either have

heard of or owned an A2000.  Most MLB infielders actually use this glove, because of its high-quality materials and great design.  This glove is particularly in the super skin series which gives you an advantage over the competition.  One of the coolest things about this glove is that it is customized, Dustin Pedroia style. Everyone knows that this guy is literally at the top of his game, so why wouldn’t you want a glove that is used in the MLB.  He just proves that this glove is of the highest caliber, so check out my full review here to see more about this glove and the details.

Rawlings Premium Pro Series

Now, this is a special review because this is not about one glove,

it is about 3 different types of gloves.  This is the Premium Pro Series gloves brought to you by Rawlings!  It is just obvious that Rawlings is a major contender to making all things baseball, but they really did a great job here with the design and the details of this glove.  One of the things that I really like with these gloves is that they are already broken in 80% by the manufacturer so you can buy this glove and play a game with it the same day without having to do any of your shaving cream or oven tricks.  That’s right, no more trips to the steamer with this series.  Whats interesting is that more and more gloves are starting to possess this quality so you should try to get one before they raise the price!  Check out my FULL review on all of these gloves here and you can find out details about pricing and such there too.

Rawlings Heart of the Hide

This glove is probably one of my favorite outfielder’s gloves because

of the awesome technology that is built into this glove.  For one, this glove features trap-eze technology which makes it much easier to keep baseballs in the glove.  I love gloves that have this technology built into it because of the feel and control that you have over the ball.  Another great feature on this glove is that it has the best materials, hence the name “heart of the hide.” This material comes from the heart of the hide.  You can find out more what that means in my full review of this glove. One more little thing that I appreciate about this glove is that it has the hole for the index finger which most outfielders utilize.  So check out my full review on this glove here to check out more details and pricing.
