How to prevent baseball Injuries

Different types of sports have their own injuries associated with them. The NFL is dominated by concussions for example. Baseball is no different with the majority of injuries being leg and ankle injuries. Let is consider some of these injuries as well look at how they can be avoided.

  1. Morton’s Neuroma

This is caused by ill-fitting shoes and most often occurs on the 3rd and 4th toes. It is a condition whereby there is an unusually abnormal swelling of the muscle tissues surrounding the nerves leading to these toes. This is a common type of nerve damage but luckily it is not hard to carry out prevention measures.

To prevent Morton’s neuroma, ensure that you wear a well-fitting pair of baseball cleats. This should be tight enough to provide optimum ankle support while at the same not be too tight that the toes are held too closely together.

  1. Fractures in the feet

These are a very common occurrence in baseball pitches and occur when a player slides the wrong way or a ball bounces off their feet. They can keep the player out of the game for months at a time and therefore the need to avoid them cannot be overemphasized.

To avoid this type of injury, ensure that you wear a good foot guard if you are a batter. To avoid sliding the wrong way and injuring yourself, make sure practicing good sliding techniques at the focal point of your training.

  1. Sprained ankles

They mainly occur when players slide at a stationary object feet first. Compared to small league diamonds, major league pitches have no breakaway bases making them easy hubs for ankle sprains.

To avoid ankle sprains, practice good techniques for sliding and ensure you are wearing ankle braces.

  1. Peroneal tendon tear

The peroneal tendon transmits feeling from the top of the foot to the outside of the leg. It is also responsible for the movement of the ankles from top to bottom and sideways. This tendon tends to get damaged over a long time of overuse which explains why players that have taken part in many games tend to suffer from it.

To prevent damage to the peroneal tendon, it is advisable to seek the attention of a physician as you as you feel discomfort rather than pushing through the pain which will only case further damage.
